The adjective ending "ый"
I'm not sure weather this question has to do with "Pronunciation and Accent", or "Grammar and Vocabulary", perhaps it's got a bit of both to it.
I just wonder what exactly the letter "й" does in such adjectives as "красный". Does it represent a sound? Apparently, it does not. The way I figure, "красны" would be pronounced exactly the same way. So is it just a matter of aesthetics? [I have to admit that красный looks more beautiful than красны, although it's perhaps because my eyes are more used to the former.]
Or perhaps the "й" is there to emphasize that "красный" is an adjective, and not, say, the plural of the imaginary noun "красн"?
Whatever the case, I suppose that while "й" is clearly pronounced in "сделай", it is not in "красный", "любимый", "хороший", etc. Am I wrong?

It DOES represent a sound.

This is a very good example: "Любимый" and "Любимы" are two different words which have different pronunciation.

Then I would say it's a bit difficult to pronounce an "й" right after an "ы", but I guess I can make the difference. How about the "й" in "пожалуйста"? Native Russians pronounce it as if there is no "й" whatsoever, more or less like "пожалыста". Is it because of fast pronunciation, or this is indeed an exception?

Five or six years for practice and you will agree that it is very easy to pronounce an "й" right after an "ы".

Here "й" can disappear in fast speech. The faster speech the more sounds would disappear. The fastest version would be "пжаста". In clear slow speech "й" is pronounced in "пожалуйста".

I tried to pronounce all these words and this is my amateurish conclusion:
In all the words "й" comes out a lot like short "ы". I have even gone so far as to pronounce "сделай" as "сделаы", making "ы" short like a consonant. The result was unmistakably "сделай", although it came out a little bit weird.
So, it's just that "-ый", pronounced casually, consists of two close and blended sounds and that is why it may be difficult for a non-native speaker to hear them both.
I never pronounce "й" in "пожалуйста".
Unless somebody asks me how it should be written, and I don't remember it ever happening. :)
