Thread: Лиля 4-ever

Anyone see the movie Lilya 4-ever? Saw it the other day. Very sad story...

I heard from moviecritics it has no positive message in it whatsoever, so I decided not to go. I have a Russian gf myself and I know a lot of her friends, a film with such a story isn't for me.

whats it about? In australia we have about as much chance of ever getting any russian films as george bush has of passing a year 3 spelling test.

actully, he's quite a good speller, leadership, is where he lacks.

It's not a Russian, but a Swedish movie. It's about a Russian girl (Liliya) that falls victim to a "loverboy" (a guy who fakes he loves her, buys her expensive gifts and all, a regular prince charming, just to force her to become a prostitute) who takes her off to Sweden where she doesn't find a fairy tale, but the harsh realities of the life as a prostitute. You won't leave the movietheater with a big smile, that's for sure...

quite the opposite of taxi driver, where a 14 year old проситиутка is shown the way by an insomniac taxi driver who is crazy enough to drive anywhere in new york at any time of night. in the end, the girl goes back to live with her parents and gets straight A's or some boring crap. i wasn't old enough to leave the theatre with a smile, but i leaft my grandpas house with one.

buying a girl expensive gifts does not obblige (sp?) the woman to become a prozzie! When was the last time you met a guy who bought a girl an expensive gift and the the guy got laid as a result?!?! If "loverboy" was Marque de Sade, more power too him, I love his work!

What touched me in the film was the main theme of friendship between Lilya and a young boy who was also rejected by his parents. In a way it is quite an artistic movie.

By the way, has anyone seen the movie "Вор"?!?!? I have just realised that there are two different versions of the film on the market with quite different endings. I wonder why that is.

this might not be the case, but alot of the time studios will record a diffrent ending while perfecting the real one, incase somthing gets leaked, and information is given, it will just be false information, and the ending will still be a surprise !

That is really interesting, didn't know. But here it seems like that the videos for the Belgian market with Dutch/French subtitles have one (more boring) ending and the videos for the English market have a longer (more interesting) ending. Strange.

You mean Вор as in Vor? I've seen it, with the ending where he shoots the вор in the end on a train station I think, after his mother dies from some illness or something. What's the other ending?

The other ending of Vor: after the boy kills Tolyan, the film makes a jump of about forty years to a war zone in the Caucasus. He is now about 55 and a tough and well liked senior commander. He is walking about on some kind of inspection, and suddenly he hears a drunk ranting in exactly the same way Tolyan did when he was trying to escape the MP control. This guy even has the Stalin tattoo on his chest - but he dies in his arms, and then he rips the shirt of the old drunk and sees that the tattoo of the panther on the shoulder is missing.

Then they have to withdraw, and there are lots of refugees around. He gives the command that women and children can travel in his army wagon. His aides are horrified, because of security and secret papers etc, but he insists. A mother knocks ferociously on his coupe door, and demands vodka - he gives her a glass - and she just stuffs a handerchief in it, and goes back with it to her young boy of about six and puts it on his ear to ease the pain of his earache.

Then he lies down on his bunk, and tries to get some rest, and for the first time since he betrayed his father by calling Tolyan daddy, he sees the same image of the soldier/his father on a train passing again. And you then see the tattoo of the panther on the back of the commander.

Oh well, at least I got to see some guns and Russki soldiers in 1895 in some movie last night. I think it was called something like The Barber from Siberia. Has anyone seen it? I especially liked the part when he yelled побудка, or whatever the word for reveille is.

Seen it. Good movie with great costumes!
