I've never been there. Sorry, would've been happy to help.
A big or small are relative notions.
    Population's about 500,000. My estimation.

OK, here are some very dry facts
(taken from rubricon.ru, all translation faults are mine):

Nizniy Novgorod, center of Nizhegorodskaya oblast, 439 km eastward Moscow. Situated at confluence of Oka and Volga. Climate moderate continental (average temp of January –12°C, July 18°C). Big transport nexus: 6 railway route (with 3 magistral). River port. Airport. Subway (from 1985). Population 1440,6 thousand (1992; 95,1 1897; 222 1926; 644 1949; 941 1959; 1170 1970; 1344 1979); third (after Moscow and St. Peterburg) city of Russia by population...

(any much more information I'm to lazy to translate )

My advise is to visit not only Н.Новгород. You should go to some towns. But if you visit only this one it will be interesting. I have been in Н.Новгород about five or seven years ago. I know they have Kremlin—very big architectural masterpiece. The first place for visit. This town is situated on confluence of Volga and Oka rivers and this place is very beautiful, you can watch it from hill. Also this town has mountanious terrain and from some places you will be able to see the town from above. So when you visit it i'm sure you will be deeply satisfied. It is not "gray town" with no places of interest, it is very good city.

One big bloody air conditioner mate !!!

Still, it only gets up to 45 about 12 times though out the year. Most of the summer it sits at about 35, then in winter it gets down to 1 or 2 at night. I'm freezing my but off at about 18 c though.

The hottest I have ever been in is about 53 C. The fluid in your eyes starts to get hotter than the rest of you. Ironically, the car I was in broke down, and one of the few cars that work in that sort of heat is the Lada Niva, for whom that day I will never forget.

    Also, Airconditioners don't work after about 49 -50 C.

z80: I'll send two kilos in wax-coated tupperware. You can pick it up in the alley behind Martinson's Bakery on 11th in Sydney. Leave the money inside the empty dougnut box in the trash can. ¬_¬

wax coated tupperware? I must have missed somthing.

Sydney is a bit too far away from here. If fact it's about the same distance as San Fransisco to Washington. Almost.
