я хотел ехать туда на машине чтобы

я хотел ехать туда на машине, чтобы приехать раньше

That's what Pimsleur says. But my brain keep wanting to say

я хотел поехать туда на машине, чтобы приехать раньше

it seems to me that we are talking about a specific trip and then we should use perfective!

Can someone explain the diff thx!

поехать sounds more natural but ехать is ok.

Both sound natural. If you mean going by some kind of transport (ехать на машине, на автобусе, лететь самолетом), the imperfective verb will be ok. If you mean some specific car you want to ride in, you can use the perfective verb. Anyway, the difference is minor.

The difference may be in a context. If the narration is in imperfective, it is logical to use ехать and vice versa.

    Context pls?

    It could mean:
    You should drive faster tonight
You have to go faster this evening
You'll make better time at evenings
    You must go faster ...

A phrase torn out of the context really doesn't help here.

During the evening you are supposed to be driving faster

    In opposition to

During the evening you are supposed to be driving slower

    er? No.
Вечером вы должны ехать/(or "вести машину") быстрее.
would be correct. Perfective forms are not possible here (although I agree that perfective sounds more natural in the sentence from the first posting).

"сможете" is more like "you can drive faster during the evening".

In common cases I'd say this way: "Вечером (по вечерам) вы должны ездить быстрее", but in the particular case I'd say: "Сегодня вечером вы должны ехать быстрее".
Could you please occasionally correct my stupid errors!
Korrigiert bitte ab und zu meine dummen Fehler!
