Do you notice how the verb does not have present tense?

Два друга загадывают друг другу загадки.

The translation is definitely not 'climb'. May be, 'to meddle' ?
Полажу - is the form of another verb ладить, Trump is used to say (in pure Russian media): "мы могли бы с ними поладить (но сначала я введу санкции!)"
Interestingly, that 1st person singular forms of both 'лазить' and 'ладить' coincide: "я лажу".
Didn't know about 'лазить' and 'ладить' , interesting. Even the stress on лажу is the same.
I found the sentence on a site as an example of correct use of a verb of motion. I suppose it would work if a climber was pointing out to his friend the route he wants to take up a mountain, saying '... сегодня я не полезу туда, но туда.'
I expected it to have the context of, maybe, a soldier refusing a command to scale a wall, saying to his seargent 'Я никогда не буду делать это', which is why it seemed wrong to me. A failure of imagination on my part, perhaps?
Ah, so we speak in direct meaning.
Then bad news is we say "Я никогда этого не сделаю" in place of "Я никогда этого не буду делать".
P1: Никогда не говори "никогда" !
P2: Ладно, никогда не скажу.
Also,
'... сегодня я не полезу туда, но туда.' does not sound right.
Could be:
'... сегодня я не полезу туда, но полезу завтра.'
'... сегодня я полезу не туда, а туда.'
'... сегодня я не туда полезу, а туда.'
First part. Totally understood and agree.
Second, I've never been sure about when to use 'а' instead of 'но'... is it easy to explain,there is probably some sort of rule for it...

I don't think it has an easy explanation. The same way as any explanation of 'the, a and zero article' is vague for me.
Probably, we should read more and pay attention to these things.
The link is a goodone, I think. I'll try thinking of 'а' as 'while', and see if, when reading, it fits well.
I agree, the cure for most things seems to be more reading...
If you are enumerating subject-action sentences your last delimeter is 'a' in most cases: 'Паша пишет, Саша читает, а Коля отдыхает'. It is just enumeration. 'a' can be omitted, but sounds good, natural. I think it can be translated as 'and' or 'while'.
If you are using 'но' as the last delimeter you oppose last sentence to all others: 'Паша пишет, Саша читает, но Коля отдыхает'. Something like 'Look at Kolya! What is wrong with this guy?'. I think it can be translated as 'but'.
These rules apply to 'subect-action' sentences only.
