These two homonyms have different origin:
брак (marriage) is an old derivation from Russian verb "брать" (to take). Literally, "брак" = "takage" when a man "takes" his fiancee to become his wife.
брак (production defect) is a loan word from German "Brack".
The problem Bob is that you didn't provide me with any examples using brak as defect. I can use it any sentence instead of defect.
Not any defect, but defect in production.
Examples:
Это брак! - you say it when showing a watch with a broken arrow (which was sold like that).
В последнее время этот завод делает много брака.
Если вы обнаружите производственный брак, обращайтесь к нам по телефону N.
(Note that "производственный брак" is a common set expression).
The adjective is "бракованный":
бракованные часы, бракованная машина, бракованная мебель... anything which was produced with defects.
BTW, the original sentence does not look right. Это работа брак is badly worded. Should be: Эта работа - брак.
