Anyway, in my opinion it's exactly the same thing.
Both words are used to introduce a reason - для того... - it's already a reason. Like here - Я делаю это для того, чтобы... - I do this for the reason that (so that)...
Чтобы - is a word used to introduce or explain the reason. So it synergizes perfectly with для того (which is already the reason) and you explain the reason with the expression after чтобы.
So as for me it's exactly the same thing. More importantly I can't even think of any examples where these 2 ways of explaining the reason could be contradistinguished.
Я делаю это, чтобы = Я делаю это для того, чтобы are the same thing
