It used to be called 'пост ГАИ'. I still prefer this term.

Yeah, they're still being called гаишники by drivers.
ГАИ is a former name of that organization. It's an abbreviation from Государственная Автомобильная Инспекция.

People are used to the former name. This service had the name of ГАИ for so many years it will be hard for people to adjust to the new name. Actually, it's been hard for people to forget the former name. How many years ago was the new name introduced?

ГИБДД. Someone once told me a humorous description of what these letters meant, but I no longer remember. Does anyone know what I mean? It's sort of like geeks saying TCP/IP stands for "this can't possibly install properly."!

Despite the fact I'm Russian, I can't tell you what that humurous description stands for. I have never heard of that TCP/Ip description before. It's great! Thanks for lifting my spirtis before bed :P

Incdidentally, what I do remember on the matter is a joke which was pretty popular with Russians before the name of ГИБДД was introduced. At the time many found it rather hard to say ГИБДД and the following joke appeared - some people suggested in a humorous way that the new name be used as a substitute for a breath test. If you can say ГИБДД properly, you're not drunk. And vice versa - if you're drunk, it's hard for you to pronounce ГИБДД clearly and distinctly.

Ну не такое уж и бывшее. ГИБДД, если на то пошло, уже тоже бывшее:

Please, correct my mistakes, except for the cases I misspell something on purpose!
