сдваивать = merge a pair into one (rare word, actually, can be used in different contexts with different meanings)

a hare merges the traces when it tries to escape chasing (loops back and runs again over the same place, following its own steps so that the mixed footprints -- or pawprints/whatever would puzzle the hunter)
also: to merge two threads into one when sewing or something to double (удвоить) the strength of the connection.
