A story is given where in a tramway a passenger, a writer, is accused in public for doing something he hasn't done (it isn't matter of skirts, ) . He, obviously, tries to defend himself. This is the exercise:

Everything is clear, save the last phrase. Looking in the web I see
Так (хочешь) они ему и поверили! with the meaning (I suppose):
"In which way (do you want) they will believe him!" But I'm not sure.
Can you make it clear for me? Thanks.

It's more interesting, emotional way of saying "they didn't believe him".

Так (хочешь) они ему и поверили!

I don't know what "хочешь" is doing there. It doesn't make sense.

Как это можно могло прийти вам в голову?

Так они ему и поверили! = Они ему не поверили. Здесь сарказм. "Oh yeah, right! They immediately believe him. Give me a break! "

I'd like to know whether the phrase, given a different context, would always be understood as a sarcastic way to say "they did not believe him", or whether it could also mean, for example, "they did indeed believe him" or "they believed him, too", with и acting as a kind of positive amplifier.

This is a set expression (With those "Так" and "и"). It always implies sarcasm.

Provided the stress pattern and intonation of speech is right, the second phrase would mean something like "but that's exactly what happened - they believed him".

"Так" must be unstressed in this case.

I can only imagine it in speech. It looks confusing in writing.

You may be spot on. It's just that I'm not sure enough about my English.

Your oppinion, of course, is worth miles of vertas more than mine, but I disagree with you in the measure of every phrase shown in the exercise is more or less against the question. One must say "no" to the question picking the different answers.

Mostly yes. But, as always, there can be some options.

Так они её и увидели! - May be both with sarcasm and without sarcasm. Depends on context.
Так ты этого и не понимаешь! - This sentence strongly depends on the intonation. It can imply more anger (or grudge) rather than sarcasm.
