    Слово за слово

    Does "Слово за слово" mean "one thing led to another"? I saw it translated that way but I can't find anything in Russian that indicates that meaning.

    Yes, this is a pretty close translation. This means that the conversation has deteriorated to insults, threats and sometimes - a fistfight (or worse).
