    A few words for the noobies - food

    I was interpreting for my friend while I was in the Ukraine.
    While we were in a restaurant he wanted a salad with only "tomatos" and "cucumbers" and I did not know either word. It was rather embarassing not to know such simple words. For all you future interpreters out there, here are some essential words.

    pear = груша
    peach = персик
    cherry = вишня
    cucumber = огурец
    tomato = помидор
    greens = зелень
    lettuce = латук
    mushroom = гриб
    olive = маслина
    raisin = изюм
    grape = виноград
    Какая разница, умереть богатым или бедным?

    Какой толк от богатства если ты не счастлив.

    The usual word for lettuce here is "салат". Maybe yours is Ukrainian?

    You can also say "оливка" for olive - I think these words are pretty much equal.

    Some people call green olives "оливки" and black olives "маслины". But I don't know whether it is right

    It's not Ukrainian and both names are right.
    Actually the proper name is "салат-латук" but people used to shorten this.
