Thread: Сказать or рассказать?

Hi!

Could you tell me a difference between verbs сказать and рассказать in sentences below? Please, correct my sentences if there are any mistakes.

Карина, скажи мне какая есть твоя подруга Ванесса.
Карина, расскажи мне какая есть твоя подруга Ванесса.

Here I am not sure whether "является" would be better than "есть"

Могли бы вы мне сказать разнису между глаголами xxx и yyy?
Могли бы вы мне рассказать разнису между глаголами xxx и yyy?

Here I am not sure if my translation of "Могли бы вы" meaning "Could you" is correct.

A word of advice. Try to provide English translations for Russian sentences you're not sure about, because:

Карина, скажи мне какая есть твоя подруга Ванесса.
Карина, расскажи мне какая есть твоя подруга Ванесса.

are a bit of a mess. Anyway, I have a hunch that what you really meant is:

Carina, tell me who your friend, Vannessa, is.

If so it should have been something like these:

Карина, скажи мне, кто такая твоя подруга, Ванесса.
Карина, расскажи мне, кто такая твоя подруга, Ванесса.

In that case there is no much difference between those two.

Могли бы вы мне рассказать разницу между глаголами xxx и yyy?

Могли бы вы is okay as long as you understand that вы might be used as a polite singular you or a regular plural вы. Also, it's common to say "Не могли бы вы" for that.

Other than that you need to rephrase the remaining parts of the sentences. Kind of like these:

(Не) могли бы вы мне сказать в чём разница между глаголами xxx и yyy?
(Не) могли бы вы мне рассказать в чём разница между глаголами xxx и yyy?

In that case the first one sounds okay, the second doesn't sound well. Anyway, I would personally said it like this:

Не могли бы вы объяснить в чем разница между... or Не могли бы вы объяснить мне разницу между...

As for the differences between сказать and рассказать.
Basically, сказать is just to say something like a word for example.
Сказать слово/предложение

Рассказать is to tell something, dipping into details. Like:

Рассказать историю. Рассказать о себе

Here is a counterpart.

Скажи, что ты вчера делал vs. расскажи, что ты вчера делал.

The first one is like you're just asking for general information about what the person was doing/did yesterday. And the answer would be something like:

Сходил в кино.

The second one implies that the asker wants to know a more detailed version of what the other pesron was doing/did yesterday. The answer would be something like that:

Сходил в кино. Там такой фильм хороший показывали and blah blah blah.

Сказать-то вы можете, но это будет: во-первых, не по-русски, а, во-вторых, вообще бессмысленно.

So your translation will be the same?

In this case it'd be better to say:

Карина, расскажи мне о своей подруге Ванессе.

Although, расскажи, кто такая Ванесса is also okay. But the first one is better, because less ambiguous
