Just wondering, as I've come across this word a couple of times... Is this simply a more archaic spelling of the word "рождение"?

Yes, I think all words ended by "-ние", "-тие", "-лие" ...(?) in nominative can be written and pronounce as "-ье" (and correspondingly in all cases and in plural). Sometimes it produces slight archaic/poetic effect but sometimes it is perfectly regular way.
Actually for some words ending "-ье" is normal but "-ие" is slightly archaic.
To add to the previous post, sometimes changing 'ье' to 'ие' can change the meaning altogether.
Compare 'воскресенье' (=Sunday) and 'воскресение' (= resurrection, revival).
Cheers,
