Thread: Perfective/imperfective list/look-up site?

Всем привет and 'ullo,

For quick reference I like to use multitran (translation) and http://starling.rinet.ru/morph.htm (morphology) - especially when I'm skiving off work (less cumbersome than books ).
But I haven't found an easy "web resource" for perfective/imperfective verb pairs yet - and that would he reeeeaaally useful.

Anyone got any ideas? Preferably an interactive site (like the ones above), where you can type in any verb, and it gives you the "other half of the pair" - or tells you there isn't one, if that's the case.

Or is that wishful thinking?

Go to http://dic.academic.ru/library.nsf/ushakov/
Write you word in the box Поиск, click magnifing glass (Начать поиск - start looking up). You get a long list of words, find you word and click on it.

There is also an English-Russian dictionary there: http://dic.academic.ru/library.nsf/muller/

BTW, I'm in the (very slow and very painstaking ) process of making perfective/imperfective Interlex lists, so that I can drill myself a bit. If anyone's interested, let me know - it would be silly for several people to go through the same (secretary) work......

I do find it astonishing that I have several Russian text books that teach you the perfective/imperfective verbs separately. Surely everyone needs to learn them as pairs and be able to look up one from the other?

What's an Interlex list? I am also compiling lists of verb pairs using P&P technology (pencil and paper), but if there's a more useful resource going I'd be interested.

Yes, I would think so - but then, maybe I'm just an old trout who doen't understand the finer details of learning the Russian language...

Totally free, no snags, dead simple to use, and the best thing is that you can compile your own vocab lists - ok, a bit time-consuming if, like me, you type cyrillic with two fingers (one on a bad day ), but the testing facilities are brilliant (imho), a great way of drilling new words (or perf/imp pairs!) into your li'l ol' decrepit brain if you have noone in the house who reads cyrillic and will help you.....



It doesn't come with perf./imp. lists, but you can create your own - you can even import them from Word or .txt-documents.

Well, I'll be flobbered! I've found a couple of vocabulary drilling programs, but none are nearly as good as that one. That's made my day

Have you found the bit where you can upload your files and share them with other users? Look at http://www.vocab.co.uk/exchange.htm. There are a couple of verb lists, may save you some time.

I think this link is the best http://russian.cornell.edu/rdt/index.htm

You will have to download their custom font to use it.
Just type the English word, and click on "go" and it finds all the possible Russian equivalents. Click on the Russian word and it shows the morphology and aspect.

shadow - yes, the cornell site is good too, it also has quite a lot of nice exercises.

For exercises, my favourite is alphadictionary.com , though, and also for a very quick lookup of basic grammar (again, especially when skiving ).

yes, I've downloaded every possible list from the Interlex site, haha. But you're right, I never thought of transforming the verbs (translation) list into a perf/imperf training list - thanks for the idea!
