What does раздаться mean and how popular is this word?
Can somebody give an example of its use?

Two meanings which I remember.
The first one is to grow fat (informal),
"Он раздался за последние 2 года" (он сильно потолстел за последние 2 года)
-- Встретила тут недавно Антона, слушай, он так раздался! Стал таким солидным!
-- Оооооо!
(Антон потолстел)
Another one is poetical and archaic.
"Поля раздались на много вёрст вокруг". (Поля простираются на много верст вокруг) It's not used in modern speech. Although feel free to use it when you want to speak epic.

also about a sound: "раздался звук выстрела".

PS. Some examples in English at the site sound rather strange, i.e. "a loud clap of thunder pealed overhead" ( they must be British ). But overall, they show the multitude of meanings of word "раздаться."
