    им. Г.В. Плеханова

I know what им. means, but not sure the best way to translate it nicely into English.

    I usually do this:

Ленинградский горный институт им. Г.В. Плеханова

The G.V. Plekhanov Leningrad mining institute.

or the Leningrad G.V. Plekhanov Mining Institute.

It's difficult to choose since it's necessary to have the sense of English language to answer, not Russian. But I like the former more

Ленинградский горный институт им. В.Г. Плеханова

Leningrad mining institute named after V.G. Plekhanov.

Всероссийский электротехнический институт имени В.И. Ленина

All-Russian electrotechnical institute named after V.I. Lenin.

I think it's really just a matter of taste; either of these would work if you ask me:
GV Plekhanov Mining Institute at Leningrad
Leningrad M I in the honor of GV Plekhanov
    Leningrad MI named for GVP
Заранее благодарю всех за исправление ошибок в моём русском.

In English that doesn't sound very good though. I know that's what it's literally means, but I don't like putting it in my translations.

    WTF?

I think it's nothing like this construction is the only right here:

    The Plekhanov Leningrad Mining Institute

Since mostly имени кого-либо is renedered this way.

I concur with Rtyom that TATY's first examples are the most appropriate because most names containing 'имени' are generally translated that way.
For instance, how would you translate: Метрополитен им. В.И. Ленина?
