Hm… I don’t think it matters if the event is historical or not.

«Он играл на гитаре до того, как начал играть в теннис»
«Он игграл на гитаре, прежде чем начал играть в теннис»

«Он поцеловал ее до того, как дал ей цветы»
«Он поцеловал ее, прежде чем дать ей цветы»

«Корейская война началася до того, как началась война во Вьетнаме»
«Корейская война началася предже, чем началась война во Вьетнаме»

I feel nothing wrong with any of these. I can be wrong though.

Sounds strange a bit. I’d put a perfective verb after «прежде чем» or «до того как». Don’t know if it is a rule or not. I think, not.

If you want to omit the verb, you should use just «до»:
«Корейская война была до войны во Вьетнаме».

Note the infinitive. One can use perfective or imperfective infinitive here, but only when
(1) the subject of both sentences is the same (thus, you cannot use it in the sentence about Korean war), and
(2) the action in the second part is performed once, not periodically (thus, «…прежде чем играть в теннис» would mean ‘…before the particular tennis game’ or something like that.)
