In the meaning "because of" they have one important difference:
"из-за" requres noun as the reason.
"потому что" requires action or full sentence (noun, verb) as the reason.
    for example:
Он сделал это из-за любви. (He did it because of love.)
    but
Он сделал это потому что любил её. (He did it because he love her.)
"из-за" can be converted to "потому что" by adding "того, что":
Он сделал это из-за того, что любил её.
