I have another question. I answered "B", but the answer key gives the right answer as "E". I don't understand why E is correct. Can someone explain it to me?

A) когда бы такая ночь заставала его на горной дороге.
B) как бы такая ночь заставала его на горной дороге.
C) если бы такая ночь заставала его на горной дороге.
D) раз такая ночь заставала его на горной дороге.
E) если такая ночь заставала его на горной дороге.
Yes, E is only correct here.

Actually, it is not a subjunctive here.
"If caught by such a night on the mountain road, a pedestrian was in a great danger."
B. is unacceptable... well... it should be "когда" or "если", not "как". A pedestrian was in danger IF or WHEN he was on the road at night. And he really WAS in danger (at least some of the pedestrians were) so it is not a subjunctive and бы is not needed.
In your test there are imperfective verbs "находился" and "заставала" which in fact describe not a single action but a repetitive situation with many pedestrians.
Оne can say something like: "Если бы такая ночь застала пешехода на горной дороге, он оказался бы в смертельной опасности." But it has a different sense. Now it is about the specific pedestrian which in fact avoided danger. It is a description of single action, therefore perfective verbs and subjunctive with "бы" are used.
You took very difficult test.
