    Он хочет пожить в деревне...

    Он хочет пожить в деревне.

Does this mean that the person just wants to stay (temporarily) in the countryside? (as opposed to living there permanently, or moving there...)
    For example:

He had a busy time lately and now [oн хочет пожить в деревне] for a while....

    Or am I misunderstanding?

Yes, you're right. "Пожить", as opposed to "жить", means just that -- "to live somewhere for some time/temporarily".
Alice: One can't believe impossible things.
The Queen: I dare say you haven't had much practice. When I was your age, I always did it for half an hour a day. Why, sometimes I've believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast.
