You dont speak better english than me. You've never read the signs on American parks that indicate what time the parks close. The dictiony definition might indicate about 5 minutes diffrence but its the same thing. let it go dear wladimir. your pictures are pretty but dont prove you point.

you don't because it doesnt matter. how do u tell when the sun is 1/4 set 1/2, 3/4's set? its just not important when the diffrence could only be 2 minutes... maybe theres a huge diffrence in russian but in english it doesnt matter.

Well, I've always thought that sunset is a period when the sun is actually settting down (i.e. it's still visible) and dusk - is a twilight AFTER the sunset.

Still I don't think that there's much difference between dusk, sunset and twilight and I'd used all of them depending on my whim. Am I right?
Send me a PM if you need me.

yea, pretty much. sunset is most common, and twilight has more to do with darkness rather than just some light but they're all interchangable.

And thats why I said dusk, because its still light, but less common... it looked like that was a poem or song so i used a poetic word.

Actually there is difference in Russian.

(That's what the poet meant in that case).

So сумерки and закат are not interchangable in Russian.
    Here's an example:
    Я плохо вижу в сумерках.
    Я любовался закатом.
Would you use here the same word in English?

    My dictionary says:

    - sunset is the daily disappearance of the sun below the western horizon
    - sunset is the atmospheric phenomena at this time; esp., the color of the western sky at sunset
    - twilight is the subdued light just after sunset
    - twilight is the period from sunset to dark
    - dusk is the beginning of darkness in the evening
    - dusk is the dim part of twilight

    From this one can infer:
    Sunset -> Twilight -> Dusk

A park closing at Sunset closes early than a park closing at Dusk. I am pretty sure...

Correcet, correct. Which brings me to my amazing mathematical equation.

Whos gunna measure if the sun is half set, 3/4ths set, all the way set, but its still light outside?? No ones. No one iz gunna stare directly at the sun to find out in any case. In both cases its still light outside... So who cares? Buring in the firey sea of the sun's light right before its dark. SaMe ThInG.

No ones gunna be like on the beach and be like WOW look how pink the sky is, what an amazing sunset! And have someone correct them saying "well actually sunsent on the 10th of october is 7:29 pm, so technically its just" *nasal laugh* dusk! merh merh merh.

    It just doesn't happen.

Yeh the difference may not mean a lot in most spoken conversations but he may as well learn the correct definition.

Sure. I'll give you that. They have a diffrent dictionary definition, but I think when translating, unless you're one of those guys who predicts weather... you know, those one guys. Forcasters or (Good guessers) it doesn't really matter. And once again since i was trying to be poetic (i fancy myself an "alright" writer... i went for more stylistic....

PS ABOUT MY gulf stream threat that got locked.

Im from seattle and the stream effects the weather constantly and is in the weather everyday. Thought, i do stand corrected... It isnt the gulf steam =))) And its no crazy jap name. I guess they just refer to it as the "jet stream". Though for some reason I couldnt produce the name.

So, the jet stream carried jap death bombs to my native west coast untill we exacted our deservied vengance on the heathan agressors.
