    на русском v по-русски

Is there a difference between на русском v по-русски grammatically? Is it kind of like "para/por" in Spanish, or just a matter of preference?
    Спасибо,
    -Соня

When you're saying "I speak Russian," what you really mean is either:

    1. I speak Russian language = Я говорю на русском языке.

    2. I speak "like Russians" = Я говорю по-русски.

So, the difference is only in usage. When you hear someone's saying: "Я говорю на русском." (which is incorrect), you'd know right away they don't really speak Russian that well.

Я бы предпочёл вариант: "На русский язык слово ___<ENGLISH WORD>____ переводится как __<RUSSIAN WORD>___."

Or, to be closer to your original: "На русский язык это слово переводится как __<RUSSIAN WORD>___."

По-русски is preferable. Depends on context though.

    P.S. Example:
Скажи ему "por favor". По-русски это [значит] "спасибо".
    ("ну русском" wouldn't work here)
In Russian, all nationalities and their corresponding languages start with a lower-case letter.

    "Путаюсь" is perfect!

In the sentence "...такой студент целый день будет говорить только на русском" the both variants (на русском and по-русски) would work.
