«колюще» — is not a separate russian word.

The construction «колюще-режущий предмет» means that «предмет» is at the same time «колющий» and «режущий».

Other examples:
«котопёс» — a dog and a cat at the same time,
«бегуще-идущий» — something/somebody who run and walk at the same time,
«сине-зелёный» — color between blue and green,
etc...

"E" is a connecting vowel that is used in complex words, though it is never used in separate words that compose such a complex word. Sometimes the words are separated by a hyphen, sometimes they are not.

There are 2 connecting vowels in Russian: "e" and "o:". They are not interchangeable.

Черный + белый = черно-белый (black & white)
Левый + рука = леворукий (left-handed)
Третий + сорт = третьесортный (third(-)rate, mediocre)

I think that words are separated by a hyphen when they both are adjectives.

Another axample: Луноход

Usually the connecting -е is used in compound words which stem ends in a soft consonant sound or a sibilant and -ц
For example птицеферма, рыжеволосый, путешествие, мышеловка, etc.
Though after a hard consonant the connecting -o is used: пароход, водолаз, однообразный, etc.

Hmm... I think you can use the following table to transform the ending of the first word (where «'» means softening previous consonant, if not already soft):

ий → 'е (колющий + режущий → колюще-режущий, третий + сорт → третьесортный)
ца, цо, ец → це (птица + ферма → птицеферма)
ёк → 'ко (???)
ое, ый → о (белое + чёрное → бело-чёрное, белый + чёрный → бело-чёрный)
ой → е (большой + груз → большегрузный)

б, в, г, д, з, к, л, м, н, п, р, с, т, ф, х → +о (кал + сборник → калосборник)
ж, ч, ц, ш, щ → +е (нож + бросать → ножебросатель(person) or ножеброс(device) )
а, и, о → о (луна + ходить → луноход)
й, ь, я → е (земля + копать → землекоп)

As you see, if a compound word should be a noun, then only a root of the second word is kept (as in «землекоп», «луноход»), if it should be adjective, than you should add «ный» or «ый» (as in «третьесортный»). If a noun should define a person then you shold add «тель» to the end: спасать(verb) → спасатель(person).

Please add and/or correct this. It is very interesting.
