There is one situation, when you can’t use the verb «произошло». If you want to talk about “background situation” in a past, you would use the «случилось» at the beginning of a sentence.

1) Случилось так, что ему пришлось идти ночью через болото.
2) Случилось мне как-то раз отправиться к деду на дачу без удочки.
3) Случилось так, что забыл я дома кошелёк в прошлую среду.
4) Случилось нам прошлой зимой (or в прошлую зиму) ехать через деревню Караваево.

As you can see, there are two ways to use it.
In first and third sentences the construction «случилось так, что» was used. In this case you can change it by «произошло», «получилось», «вышло»: «произошло так, что», «вышло так, что». But in two another sentence you can’t make this substitute, because «случилось» in this case is close to the verb «пришлось». However, «пришлось» means that you had not a choice, «случилось» means, that situation was a coincidence.
