    как or что ?

I think как ты думаешь is wrong and что ты думаешь is correct. But why? What is the difference between как and что? Thank you.

    Оба варианта корректные.
Например можно сказать: Как ты думаешь, это пальто мне идёт?
или можно сказать: Что ты думаешь об этом пальто, оно мне идёт?

What do you think about, impulse, is "О чём ты думаешь?"

"Невозможно передать смысл иностранной фразы, не разрушив при этом её первоначальную структуру."

Thanks for the example but I still do not understand the difference between Что and Как.

"Как ты думаешь, <insert yes/no question here> ..." is used when you are asking about opinion (yes/no) on some topic ("Say, do you think I should call him?")

"Что ты думаешь о <insert topic here>" is what is says on the tin: the question about what.. a person.. thinks on the topic ("What are your thoughts on global warming?").

    "Как ты думаешь, <insert yes/no question here> ..."
Не так всё просто. Рассмотрим примеры на "как ты думаешь" :

А кто окажется в выигрыше, как ты думаешь?
Как ты думаешь: ему нравится гольф?
Я думаю, что надо одеться потеплее. А ты как думаешь?
То есть, предложение содержит вопрос сам по себе ("а кто окажется в выигрыше?" и вспомогательную часть, "для красоты". Лингвисты должны знать, как эта часть называется.
То есть, "как думаешь" - это такой устоявший оборот речи, вроде вопроса "How do you find [America, ...] ?", ответ на который не обязательно содержит описание метода нахождения Америки.

    P.S.
Вот, вспомнил забавную фразу из компьютерной игры:

Where do you think you are going?

Перевод будет состоять как раз из двух частей (как и английское предложение):

Как ты думаешь, куда ты прёшься?
"Невозможно передать смысл иностранной фразы, не разрушив при этом её первоначальную структуру."

Дословный перевод, конечно же, будет состоять ровно из того, из чего оригинальное предложение. Слава богу, это неправильный перевод.

But yeah, I forgot that you can also use "Как ты думаешь" in other phrases, like "Say, when do you think we can move all that furniture?" A set expression engouraging listener to share an opinion."Что ты думаешь", on the other hand, is rather straightforward ("What thoughts do you have regarding...") in same contexts.

    как или что?

как means how, and что means what. So you don't say often, "How are you thinking?"; you say more often, "What are you thinking?".

как also means like, when used as a relative pronoun, and что also means that, when used as a relative pronoun.

My teacher often asks questions like us these: "Что вы думаете? Вы думаете, что Джей русский или американец?"

"What do you think? Do you think that Jay is Russian or American?"

That is quite an unnatural way to say it. "Что вы думаете" doesn't work well with "or": usually it implies you should express your thoughts, not just pick an option (yes/no, Russian/American). "Что вы думаете?" can also be used separately, for example, when you are making an offer and then ask "So, what do you think?" (i.e. is it a bargain?).

Besides, as I already said, "Вы думаете, что Джей русский или американец" sounds as if you were reflecting on the fact that Jay is either Russian or American (that is, active thought process vs. having an opinion). Usually it would be "Как вы думаете, Джей русский или американец?" Remember, "как вы думаете" is a set expression, so it doesn't mean "how do you think" word-for-word.

@Shady_arc: Yup, you're right. I even got them confused. I just found my scrawled out notes and it says, "Что вы думаете? Вы думаете, что Джей русский?" and, "Как вы думаете? Вы думаете, что Джей русский или американец?" Thank you for correcting my mistake.

Sibiriak is very right, when he says that both versions are correct. in both cases, the semantics is the same:you ask someone about his opinion. The difference is in syntax, or in how you build your sentence after these two phrases.

When you start with "как ты думаешь", it functions as a parenthesis (i.e. an independent, isolated sentence), and has to be followed by another complete sentence that has the subject and the predicate. So you will end up with a compound sentence, in which you have two predications, two clauses:
    (1) КАК ты думаешь , (2) эту книгу стОит читать?
    (1) КАК ты считаешь , (2) моё предложение дельное?
    (1) КАК ты полагаешь, (2) что будет дальше?"

However, when you start with "ЧТО ты думаешь.....", it already is the predication (I.e. the subject and the predicate), and that is why you have to add only the complement. in this case you end up with a simple sentence, with one predication:
"ЧТО ты думаешь об этой книге?
ЧТО ты думаешь по этому поводу?
ЧТО ты думаешь о моём предложении?
