    Прибывшие наряды

    Hi!

I have seen the following sentence in an article in the newspaper.

Прибывшие наряды полиции установили, что оба являются сотрудниками полиции МВД Коми.

    What does Прибывшие наряды mean?

George if you are asking about the grammatical aspect then прибывшие is the действительное причастие прошедшего времени which replaces the verb structure: who arrived = которые прибыли. Regarding наряд Ι also did not know what it means, in my mind it refers to clothes and jewel.

Чем больше слов, тем меньше они стоят.

As was said in the wiki above, one of the meanings of "наряд" is "order for work". Sometimes it is used in industry. In army it can mean auxilary activities, such as cleaning, serving food, etc, on the basis of rotation queue. There is common disciplinary punishment "два/три наряда вне очереди", which means soldier will do extra turns immidiately. But also "наряд" means such regular activities as patroling territory in army/police and in this case it also can be for the police/army unit itself.

OK my friends, so the translation of наряд could be squad , detachment, or unit? Maybe all of them?

Nice Antonio, that helped me a lot!

As for the word наряд, let's see what the natives think about it.

Maybe I do not know some details and difference between "squad , detachment, or unit", but they sound ok.
In this case it is just group of policemen who have order to do some work. Sounds overabundant. But this term exists in this case. Maybe it is specific professional deformation of army/police to emphasize the obvious things.

Наряд is either a specific task or a group of people assigned to a specific task. It can also be a document stating that a specific task must be carried out. Note: this word is in no way reserved for military/police use only, although it is used most often there.

Наряд на получение груза - A document that states you're allowed to unload the goods or a group of people assigned to this task.
Закрыть наряд - to complete the task
Караульный наряд - those who are to perform a sentry job
Наряд полиции - those who are to actively carry out the police duties. People who patrol the streets, roads etc, as opposed to those with a desk job.

I do not claim that my opinion is absolutely true.
If you've spotted any mistake in my English, please, correct it. I want to be aware of any mistakes to efficiently eliminate them before they become a habit.

It could be ('unit' is probably better as it can be any number of people).

But it's usually 'small squad, small unit' (several people, 2-5 people).
