Thread: играть рояль или в рояле

I see in an exercise "Я делаю упражнениa на разные правила" (вини.). In the Dictionary I find "упражнение по испанском языке, в рояле" (пред.). The difference between "practice the piano" (playing scales up and down) and "practice in the piano "( playing Klavier Konzert KW-120, for instance), or "practice in the car" (not starting it) or "practice the car" (running through the streets) is clear. Perhaps is this the difference? I see no other else. Thanks

for me it always seems like на рояле (grand piano), на пианино (piano).
Can be also играть на фортепиано (to play the fortepiano), but also занятия по (классу) фортепиано - the fortepiano study/class

Nothing about the piano. That has been a little joke. My problem is to know whether упражнение has на or в with prepositive case, as I see in my Dictionary, or на with accusative case, as I see in the exercise of my book. That's why I suggest if the matter is "an exercise on" (Prep.) or "exercise" something (Acc.). Thanks

"упражнение по испанском языке, в рояле" - dictionary is simply wrong.

"упражнение по испанскому языку"
"упражнение в игре на рояле"

You can also say, "упражнение по роялю", but it's not pure, it's colloqual and it describes "упражнение" as exercise, not as exercising.

On the other hand, "Упражняться на рояле". (Well, you still better say, "Упражняться в игре на рояле.")
