Hmm. When I saw the word, my immediate first reaction was that it was derived from "земля" and it would mean some kind of mud hut or something earth-y. Were you thinking of "зим" as in "зима"?
Lingvo says it means "country woman", so I suppose my guess wasn't too far off!
I think it's the female form of земляк (compratiot)
земляк (m) / землячка (f) means the person from the same geographical location.
For an instance, people from Дзержинск (my hometown) are мои земляки.
