So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish
so something like "passionate"?
I thought жуткий meant "terrible"

Exactly. A terrible thing has an extremely strong effect on you. And here the love also affected them as strong as a very terrible thing. So here using "terrible" they describe the degree of affecting but not the sort of feelings (good or bad).Originally Posted by quartz

In this case you can translate жуткая любовь as awesome love, but awesome is a much more positive word. Жуткий, жуткая, жуткое are closer to scary, terrible.

I would translate this as "they were madly in love"
I don't think this word is necessarily bad, but it means something that is extreme, possibly in a good or bad way (maybe there are more things in life that are extremely bad than extremely good). You might compare it to some archaic English expressions using "terribly" - for example "I'm terribly sorry" or "I miss you terribly."
You often hear expressions like я жутко хочу... which is like "I want ... really bad" or "я жутко хочу пить" - "I'm so thirsty" etc.

Вставлю свои четыре пиастра.
В моём понимании "жуткая любовь" - это игра слов, оксюморон.
With a neutral noun "жуткая" means something negative or neutral, but with a strong doze of adrenaline, a reaction close to a panic attack or a feeling of disgust. With a positive noun, however, "жуткая" looks suspicious, so it is either an awkward utterance (used for lack of a better expression), or an intentional pun, which means that their love made them shiver with something (which is not explained).
Seems a little like "I got it bad, and that ain't good." The pain of love.
