Thread: Еда or еду?

Hello forum members,
Today I just have a short question. The word for food in Russian is "еда", so if I wanted to say "I want food", I thought you would say "Я хочу/предпочитаю еда", but Google translate gives me "Я хочу еду." So my question is, what sort of form of the word "еда" is "еду"? Thanks for reading.

Я хочу еду—правильно, Я хочу еда—неправильно.

P.S.: но если бы я был голоден, я бы скзал: Я хочу есть.

It's in accusative case - in this case it shows what is being wanted by the verb хотеть but conjugated "Я хочу".

I don't like the name "accusative" very much as it doesn't reflect the concept, which puzzles the young brains of the learners.
The basic concept behind the name means that a noun in this form of the accusative case "answers the question of" "кого, что" (whom,what) in Russian.
Example: Я виню (I accuse) Машу (accusative for neutral "Маша") за то, что она не позволила мне набить морду придурку, который к ней приставал.
(I accuse her of not letting me break the face of the dork who was hitting on her)
I'm afraid a native speaker of English would be "lost in cases" at the beginning, because they don't understand how a noun can answer the question "whom".

Instead, I'd name this case "objective case", which can simply denote an object of a phrase.
If we take the general pattern "subject verbs object", the object should be in the accusative(objective) case.
I love Mary: Я люблю Машу (Маша)
I hate Mary: Я ненавижу Машу (Маша)
I will kill my neighbor: Я убью своего соседа (сосед)
I want food: Я хочу еду (еда)

Depending on which question may be asked, the form of the noun will change...

Я хочу (ЧТО? WHAT EXACTLY?) FOOD? Еду!
Я хочу (КОГО?) Машу? - because she is alive (person or animal), that`s why we use "Кто" ("кого") instead of "Что".

Take into account that you should accent the last letter. Я хочу едУ.
Otherwise, the phrase "Я Еду" would mean I`m driving.

P.S. And for novices I highly recommend just to remember simple expressions like: I`m hungry

All (people) in Russian is "все".
In the formula "Спасибо + who" -- who must be in the dative case.
"Все" is conjugated in dative is "всем".
