вчерашний and страшный...why is one и, the other ы?

Hi,

I thought there was a spelling rule that says that adjectives in nominative masculine form only end in ий if the previous consonant is a sibilant, like ш. But вчерашний's stem ends in н. Is вчерашний just a rare exception to the rule? Does the rule about sibilants at the end of an adjective stem also apply if the penultimate consonant is a sibilant?

If so, why isn't страшный spelled страшний? I must admit it doesn't look right to me spelled like that...
Is it anything to do with страх being masculine, and вчера being feminine?

I found a pertinent discussion and some helpful links for you.

"What you're talking about are soft endings (-ий) and hard endings (-ый).
With the exception of a handful of words (maybe 40 at the most!) everything else follows the simple rule:
The word gets a hard ending (-ый), except after velars (к г х) and hushes (ш ж щ ч).
Observe: белый, красный, красивый, прелестный, are all hard.
However, далёкий, близкий, больший, горячий, are all soft.

The exceptions are adjectives with soft stems, and they are few (as I said, maybe about 40). They're easy to memorize on their own. They include: синий, последний, etc. "

In order to master the adjective endings you need to be aware of the following factors:

A. HARD STEMS

1. Stem stress vs. Ending stress. Hard-stem adjectives can be either

• stem-stressed (нОв-ый, мАленьк-ий, красИв-ый, хорОш-ий) or
• ending-stressed (a different ending will show only in masc.sg.: молод-Ой, больш-Ой, как-Ой, голуб-Ой).

2. What consonant does the stem end in:

• a “good” consonant (нОв-ый, бел-ый, голуб-Ой) or
• a “trouble” consonant К Г Х Ш Ж Щ Ч (больш-Ой, мАленьк-ий, хорОш-ий).

3. Trouble Consonant Rules:

3.1 7-letter Rule: Never write “ы” after К Г Х ШЖЩЧ: Кы Гы Хы Шы Жы Щы Чы.
Always write “И”: КИ ГИ ХИ ШИ ЖИ ЩИ ЧИ instead.

Alarm spots:

• Masc. Sg. in stem-stressed adjectives (хорОш-ий, мАленьк-ий)
• Nom. PL. all stems (хорОш-ие, мАленьк-ие, больш-Ие, плох-Ие, как-Ие)

3.2. 5-letter Rule: Never write unstressed “o” after Ш Ж Ч Щ and Ц.
Always write “е” instead.
Alarm spots:

• Neut. Sg. in stem-stressed adjectives (хорОш-ее)

B. SOFT STEMS

All soft stems are “good”; they make no troubles, except …
…you have to memorize them.

The only two soft-stem adjectives we are going to have for the time being are:
СИН-ИЙ and ПОСЛЕДН-ИЙ - REMEMBER THEM!!!

It seems вчерашний is on your linked googlebook's page of exceptions, so that clears that one up! There are more exceptions than I expected though, I'll get a bit more familiar with the regular ones before tackling them.

"К сожалению, в русском языке 4 типа прилагательных.

Первый тип имеет твёрдую основу: новый.
Второй – мягкую: синий.

Для удобства предлагаю назвать их «классический твёрдый» и «классический мягкий» тип.

«Классический мягкий» тип (синий) самый малочисленный. Он включает порядка 20 прилагательных с основой на мягкий [н'] только
(утренний, вечерний, вчерашний, сегодняшний, завтрашний, зимний, весенний, летний, осенний, последний, ближний, дальний, передний, задний, ближний, дальний, домашний, синий и подобн.), притяжательные прилагательные (типа лисий, медвежий),
порядковое числительное третий, изменяющееся по той же модели,
и притяжательные местоимения мой, твой, свой, наш, ваш.

Если детки не слышат разницу между твёрдым [н] и мягким [н'], эту группу придётся просто запомнить, так как невозможно предугадать, когда [н] будет твёрдым: чёрный, - а когда мягким: вечер[н’]ий

Тип прилагательных 4 и 3 соответственно предлагаю назвать «смешанными».
К «смешанному» типу 1 (то есть 3) относятся прилагательные, у которых основа оканчивается на шипящие –ж-, -ш-, -щ- и –ч-, а ударение при этом падает на основу: прохОжий, хорОший, слЕдующий, горЯчий.

К «смешанному типу 2 (то есть 4) относятся все прилагательные с основой на -к-, -г-, -х- (русский, строгий, тихий), а также прилагательные, у которых основа оканчивается на шипящие –ж-, -ш-, а ударение при этом падает на окончание: чужОй, большОй.

Окончание -ЫЙ в форме Им. пад. ед. ч. муж. род. под ударением меняется на –ОЙ."
