that's a more formal way of saying "строить" (construct/build - which are more technical),
it makes sense that they used the word возводить for Stonehendge as it's not a technical modern structure.

it's quite typical to use this word of religious buildings too, or any landmark of particular importance (Pyramides, a cathedral, etc.).
but it would be ridiculous to use it for an ordinary house (возводить is a more sophisticated word)

what would the English equivalent be?

'erected'? probably this one fits.
