It has recently come to my attention that "Я в курсе = I'm aware that"
So if I wasn't say that I am in a course, I can't use "Я в курсе"?

Valda
Я в курсе comes out Я в курсе событий what means I'm aware of the events
Let me write a simple example.
-Ты слышал, что Анна забеременела? (Have you heard that Anna's pregnant?)
-Я в курсе (Yes, I knew that before you told me)
Does it work in past tense?
I was aware = я была в курсе?
Why not? If you refer to past events of courseQuote:

But can it also mean "I was in a course"?
Я была в курсе русского языка
I assume by COURSE you refer to a series of lesson in a particular subject. If so you can't use Я в курсе. We say
Я хожу на курс по русскому языку|Я посещаю курс по русскому языку - Present Tense
Я была/побывала на курсе по русскому языку| Я сходила/ходила на курс по русскому языку | Я посетила/посещала курс по русскому языку - Past Tense
Я буду ходить на курс по русскому языку | Я пойду на курс по русскому языку | Я буду посещать курс по русскому языку - Future Tense
But be aware that we can say both курс русского языка or курс по русскому языку and both of them are right. I chose to use only the variant with по to not confuse use too much.
курс + noun in the genetive case or курс по + noun in the dative case
Ah, so you use "на" instead of "в" and it's all settled. Gotcha :) Appreciate your feedback.

Я закончила курсы русского.
