    в канун, накануне

накануне юбилея = 1 day before the jubilee/anniversary
в канун Нового Года = on New Year's eve

    ...right?

the first one indicates something 1 day before an event, the other one something happening on the eve of... ?
    no pain, no gain

Right, but it can also mean some time before some event.
A week, in some cases maybe even months.
