It can be specified in the context
    For example
я говорил с моим коллегой - I have talked to my (male) co-worker
я говорил с моей коллегой - I have talked to my (female) co-worker

Perhaps we can only specify their gender by using a possessive pronoun: мой коллега, моя коллега, твоя коллега. Though we cannot detect their gender by the plural form мои коллеги. We can also say мои коллеги мужчины or ее коллеги женщины in the plural. But in the singular we can say коллега мужчина or коллега женщина only when we mention an abstract person like in Что можно подарить коллеге мужчине? You can never say, "Сегодня ко мне подошел коллега мужчина и сказал..." Though you can know their gender by the past tense form of the verb подошел or подошла (it's impossible in the present or future).

Some words can be grammatically interpreted as either masculine or feminine depending on the context. They are called сушествительные общего рода (general gender nouns ?).
"Россия для русских" - это неправильно. Остальные-то чем лучше?

In Serbian there are both gendres: колега (male) and колегиница (female). Like друг/другарица, познаник/ познаница (acquaintance)...

И чехи, говорящие по-русски, иногда говорят "моя колежка"
"Невозможно передать смысл иностранной фразы, не разрушив при этом её первоначальную структуру."
