What's the difference between wish and want?

I am wont to wish to want to wish for wanting a wishful wish of wanted wantingness for wishes of wishful wishfulness wantings and such.

Now YOU tell ME.

желать is more 'desire / wish'
хотеть is a basic 'want'

As Olya said, the difference isn't entirely obvious in English either.
