War, work, are hard if not impossible to generalize. War and work can take place anywhere, over any number of fields, fronts, nations, buildings etc...
Childhood is pretty much the same, you can't really draw a line bordering where childhood starts or stops.
I'm not sure about other words like С дерева, с вокзала, с балкона because its pretty easy to tell one tree, station, or balcony from another. I guess you have to learn them as you find them.
"C/co" can also mean "from the top/surface of something" as opposed to "из" ("from within"):Quote:

Well, just to be a pain in the butt, sometimes the preposition с can be used with accusative in the meaning "approximately"

I have studied Russian since... um.... 1977, and it still throws me curves. Of course, any language you study as a non-native can always surprise you.
