Annet-
"Wage" is typically used to state how much you earn per hour, and "salary" is used for your yearly earnings. So, someone that has a wage of $20 per hour has an approximate salary of $41,000.

"Wage" and "Salary" have the nearly same meaning and are almost completely interchangeable. I use salary more than wage.
Here are my definitions.
Salary usually refers to rate of pay (usually by year) and it is never plural when referring to single person.
Example: His salary is $50,000 per year.
Example: Their salaries are $50,000 per year.
Wage is rate of pay per hour, day, or payperiod. It can be plural.
Example: His wage is $25 per hour.
You can probably say the following and nobody would care.
His wages are $50,000 per year.
His salary is $25 per hour.
and maybe
His wage is $50,000 per year. (This sounds a bit strange)
You CANNOT say
His salaries are $50,000 per year.
Chort. Fantom beat me.
Also, "wage" can mean "to engage" when referring to battles or wars.
Example: Napoleon and Hitler waged war against all of Europe
Thanks a lot!
I'll keep it in mind.
why do ppl ask such questions in a RUSSIAN GRAMMAR section???
this is a basic question, though
what's the russian word for wage or salary??
I have to ask, what does "chort" mean? :)Quote:

I looked up salary in wage in Rambler.
оклад = wage
жалованье = salary
"Жалованье" sounds archaic, nobody uses it. "Oклад" is a word from soviet times. In some jobs during soviet time monthly bonuses ("премия") were usual. "Oклад" was used to name salary without this bonus.
Ah yes, the good ol' Monthly bonuses of which we used to depend on to take the car for the extra spin around the block, the extra day at the dacha, the one bowl of borsch too many. Those were the days in which every russian citizen could afford a pair of blue jeans, but would never buy them. Lenin invented that bonus in 1922, but with perestrioka Gorby THREW them out the window along with each of the soviet states. I miss my премия :( :(
So what are the correct words for salary and wage?Quote:
