my guess is that it is some form of the word (transliterated) "polucheet" or is it poluchat?? :? well, whatever the word is that means "to receive." I keep hearing it used in conversational speech but can't find the dictionary entry.

heh no prob. You'll pick understand spelling a lot more once you start learning grammar.
for example "большой стол" "большое спасибо" - adjectives change their endings depending on the case of the noun.
you'll catch on.
