Hi, could someone tell me what these adjectives mean?
-Скажите, зачем вам эта работа? Карьеру вы здесь не сделаете.
-А я ее нигде не сделаю. Характер не тот. Нужно быть пробивным, оборотистым, нахальным. У меня этого нет.
пробивным - agressive maybe?
оборотистым - don't know
нахальным - also don't know

I obviously know what these words mean. But can't translate good enough.
Пробивной = Pushy
Оборотистый = dunno... something with turning... be able to backstab?
нахальный = Cheeky
Пробивной - энергичный, достигающий желаемого результата в трудной обстановке, настойчиво добивающийся своих целей всеми возможными средствами. В отличии от pushy в общем-то положительное качество в человеке, особенно необходимое лидеру.
Оборотистый - способный "крутиться", умело использовать все имеющиеся возможности.

My dictionary gives me a number of meanings of the word 'дерзкий'. It will take up a lot of space here if I place them all.
Well the root of нахалный is нахал, meaning jerk, so maybe its jerk-like?Quote:

So just from the context i kinda got the feeling that she means дерзкая as kinda cheeky, impudent (my dictionary gave the definition impudent) which is kinda rude, stuck up... cheeky.
I don't think a нахал is a jerk necessarily, but somebody who is cheeky.
Like somebody who comes uninvited and sits down and eats your dinner is a нахал.
A jerk is somebody who does something bad to others for his own good. A cheeky person just asks for favors when he has no right to.
I think of a jerk as somebody who is just rude. I never use the work cheeky so...
It's like that commercial for A-1 steak sauce...Im sure you've all seen it...the woman is yelling at a man eating dinner at her table "Hey! Why are you DOING THIS? I dont even know you!"..and then the man leaves, and the lady's husband sits down, and says "Did you eat my steak"...Quote:

I think дерзкий and нахальный are sort of synonyms when they're used with negative meaning. But дерзкий means "not afraid of taking risks or not afraid to do something new and unusual that many people will find shocking" as well.
