I see in an exercise for the imperative of выделить : выдели,выделитe and I don't see why it is like this. According to my rules (like ответи-ть) it should be выдель, выдельте. Looking in the dictionary I read that it is an irregular imperative, as its regular form should be "выделй". So it means that the stem of выделить is выдели(й)-ть -> выделить. It is OK or do you think that the stem is different? Thank you.
When forming imperative of вы-prefixed verbs, you should do as if the accent was not on вы but on the stem. It means that the imperative of выделить is made by adding вы to the imperative of делить, so it is выдели and not выдель.
вы_дел_ить, вы_дел_ять
по_дел_ить
об_дел_ить, об_дел_ять
раз_дел_ить, раз_дел_ять
The stem appears to be дел after all.
To be honest I don’t know the rules, cause actually I don’t often need to, but Zubr here is a smart guy, it wouldn’t hurt to listen to what he says. :wink:

"My" rules for forming imperative, taken from alphadictionary.com and other places are:
The stem ends in -й?
1) Yes. Like in делай- -> дела(й)ть. No addition is necessary: делай, делайте
2) Not. Last vowel is removed and
2.1. 1st. p. sing acute? Yes
пис(а)- пишý. и is added пиш(a)и ->пиши
2.2. 1st. p. sing acute? Not
ответ(и)- отвéчу. ь is added ответ(и)ь - отвéть
Unless the last vowel is preceded by two consonants, in this case
пóмн(и)- пóмню Last vowel is removed and и is added пóмни.
These rules up to now have worked. My dictionary puts this verb, if its imperative wasn't irregular, in the case 1). Thanks.
There are two very similar verbs... (http://lingvo.abbyyonline.com/ru/en-ru/выделять) Выделять (imperf.) и выделить (perf.). Imperative "выдели" is from "выделить" and imperative from "выделять" will be "выделяй"...
Imperfective one even works like that according to the set of rules you listed, or so it seems to me... Perfective one would work if you throw away "вы-" and use "делить", like Zubr suggested.
A correction on what I have said: My dictionary doesn't say that the imperative regular should be in -й. Simply says that it follows the regular rules, that is to say: выдель, выдельте. In Морфологический Анализ puts like Imperative of this verb выдели, выделитe. To be studied.
The rule give by Zubr and that I hadn't found in no place previously is the matter, and the solution. I have found now other examples. The doubt is produced because in the dictionary says that выделить follows the pattern 4a as for the accent (on prefix вы-), OK but doesn't say that as for imperative keeps the pattern of делить (pattern 4b or 4c). I have found other examples of the same model: учить (учи, учите) - выучить (выучи, выучите). In less words: after adding вы, pattern 4a as for accent; keeping previous pattern 4b or 4c as for imperative. Thank you.
