Thread: same, similar, looks like, different

I have some problem with the translation of these expressions. Especially with the use of same, similar:

1. You have the same car with me.
2. Your car is similar to mine.
3. Your car looks like my car.
4. Your car is different than mine.

2 and 3 mean the same in English? My Russain sentences do mean the same.

"similar" is almost the same meaning as "looks like" but it doesn't necessarily refer to phyiscal appearance. For example "our cars don't look the same, but they are similar in quality"

I don't think there's really an exact Russian equivalent to the word "similar" - at least I've seen a lot of Russian people use it incorrectly - the closest translation would be почти, но не полностью, одинаковые,

for example I often hear stuff like "almost similar" which doesn't make any sense - since "similar" already contains the meaning of "almost"

подобный, похожий, сходный. Things are not that bad in Russian. No Russian would use почти with those three words.

Because as I know "moiu" is an Accusative possesive pronoun but after "na" we usually use Prepositional.

похожа на + Accusative.

"на" + Prepositional = usually "to be on something" (Normally translated as "on")
"на" + Accusative = usually "to move to somewhere, to put to the top of something, to look at something..." (Normally translated as "to") Compare: "похож на что-то" = "similar to smth."

Your car is similar to mine. - Твоя машина - такая же, как (и) моя. Наши машины одинаковые.

So when "na" is used to answer questions of "gde" the Prepositional is used.
But when "na" is used to answer question of movement the Accusative is used.
I like the explanation "Наши машины одинаковые" but I didn't undersrtand the explanation of "Твоя машина - такая же, как (и) моя" what part of speech is "такая же"?

Вот-вот. Я тоже об этом думал. Английская версия и вправду говорит, что машину одна на двоих? Просто курьезная ситуация, я не думал, что имеется ввиду это.

У тебя машина такая же (same) как у меня.
У нас с тобой одинаковые машины
У тебя машина похожа(я) на мою
У нас с тобой похожие машины

"такой" is a demonstrative pronoun ("such", "suchlike")
"же" is an intensive particle
together "такой же" means "similar"

resemble - напоминать, походить на, быть похожим на.
Your car resembles mine. - Твоя машина напоминает мою. Твоя машина похожа на мою.

Pleass correct me if I am doing wrong: "Поведение людей в Греции такой же как поведение людей на Кипре". As you can see I included also "tak". Is this expression correct.

An additional question based on "same" is how I will say: "This is exacltly the same thing" or in a more comprehensive phrase: "This is exactly the same thing with what I have been saying".

Поведение людей в Греции такое же, как поведение людей на Кипре. Средний род. И я не вижу здесь никакого "tak".

"Это то же самое". "Я говорил об этом же".
