ему cтало очень и очень груcтно

It looks weird to me. I thought you would use еще or maybe some word like больше...

Это вполне распространённое выражение и звучит нормально.
    очень и очень грустно

Sadder and sadder doesn't mean "очень и очень грустно"
I see sadder and sadder in constructions like this: "Ему становилось всё более и более грустно".
    "He grew sadder and sadder"
    -- Да? Коту Ваське, бл##?
    -- Нет, Я кот Васька :-/

Повтор одного и того же слова использован для усиления, союз "и" между ними также звучит совершенно нормально, хотя, конечно, вариант "ему стало очень, очень грустно" тоже возможен. Но на мой вгляд, первая фраза звучит красивее

For example I couldn't agree more or I do agree with you also can look strange for Russians, because in Russian it's said in other ways when one mean the same.

It was the и that confused me. и's are sort of disbursed randomly throughout the russian language and they almost always confuse me.

You can say as well Он становился всё грустнее и грустнее...

Я бы тоже это посоветовала, но здесь другой случай. Там ему уже стало грустно, и все, он в этом состоянии. А слово "становился" показывает изменение состояния... "Грустен" и "грустнеет" - разные понятия.

So, all I can advice is not to translate word by word but use means of your own language (to explain the meaning).

Please, correct my mistakes, if there are any in the English part of the messages.

I can't agree more... However, it all depends what's type of the text and what's the context... I would translate differently fiction and technical documentation...
