Thread: Russian sentence - which case and why?

I have a few questions:

1) "мы не могли радоваться лету и отдыху."

I believe лету and отдыху are in the dative case. Is this correct and why would this be?

2) Also, in this sentence

кот залез под дом

why wouldn't дом be in the instrumental case?


3) выхода оттуда не было

Why is быть сonjugated for a neuter noun? Shouldn't it just be был since выход is masculine?

1) This is how it's used. Мы радуем кого-либо but радуемся чему-либо.

я им рад,
ты Моим цветам совсем Не рада.
ты Не радуешься Тёплым дням.

2) Movements toward "under something" require Accusative. Compare:
Глиссер остановился под мостом.
Глиссер просвистел под мостом.
Глиссер заехал под мост (Acc)
Probably it's easier to understand with Present:
Кошка отдыхает под кроватью.
Кошка проходит под кроватью.
Кошка направляется под кровать. (Acc)

3) It's unbelieveable but a lack of something is conducted with such a pattern: "не было ... (any gender, any number)"
Compare

у меня был нож
у меня была жена
у меня было желание

But:

у меня не было ножа
у меня не было жены
у меня не было желания

it's not in accusative, because it's not moving TOWARD underneath something, but because it's just moving under something?

Ahh thank you. Makes sense. I think I picked up on that but in writing it just seemed strange.
