Without "вы" (ты) it would be correct but a little bit impolite. It is better to use "вы" (ты) in such questions.
In some contexts, you can omit "вы", and it would sound okay. But if it's just a 'neutral' sentence, you should use the pronoun, otherwise the phrase could sound... sort of incomplete.
Thanks!
Ok for the time being I'll be careful not to "lose" the pronoun!
I think the reason it happened was that I have some experience of studying French and Spanish. Those language have similar bending of the verbs - so they think that the pronoun isn't needed. It must have got stuck in my brain somehow, so that I incorrectly applied it to Russian.

Опустить "вы" вполне нормально, если это продолжение разговора и "вы" уже употреблялось (неоднократно).
- Вы учитесь или работаете?
- Учусь в институте.
- На каком курсе учитесь?
- На третьем.
В общем, грамматически в таком предложении все правильно, но есть стилистические особенности.
- В каком полку служили?
Такой стиль еще подходит и для обращения к младшему или подчиненному, к которому "вы" употреблять не хочется, а "ты" звучит грубо.
