"A number" in Russian is not a noun it is translated as несколько and it could be an adverb or a numeral (as in here)Quote:

This is how I would translate it
Несколько древних культур развились в огромную территорию - СССР
please remember that in Russian античный always relates to Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome. So you can't say that античный and ancient are totally equal; ancient can also translate as древний, старый, старинный, etc.
