    None will stay calm???

    Hi,
I am new here, and I am interested in Russian, because of the most trite reasons of all, love. Back to grammar:

I was wondering whether anyone knows if this phrase None will stay calm is a 'bad' translation (too literal) of a russian phrase/expression.

If yes, is the russian expression relating to something special or specific?

    Thanks!

    First: welcome!
    Second: Putin is a droid.
Third: "Nobody will stay calm"=Никто не будет стоять спокойно. No, I don't see any special expression here. It is not a proverb or somethig, if you are asking.

    Может, "никого не оставит равнодушным"?

I also though about "никто не устоит".
    Context usually helps.

    Hmm,
the context is even more trite and embarrassing, it was a tagline for a russian version of that men's magazine, Maxim ... yeah, I know.
The women were supposed to be so hot, that 'None will stay calm'.
And English is not my native tongue but i don't think that that is correct English?
'Nobody will stay calm' sounds a bit better, more natural than 'None will stay calm'.

And I don't speak Russian or read Cirrilic, except for ten words, I can say:
Very well mister (Horror show, Gas pudding)
and 'no, thank you, miss' (new jet, spicey bar, gasp! a ditch, yeah!)

PS I would say 'Private car dealer' too, but I don't know what that means ...

Thanks Gerty (why do the hot babes always live so far away?) and all others too.

Didn't think I would get so many reactions...

The explaination is kinda ..... without use? Or, is this the famous Russian sense of humour? Or .... lack thereof?

    Shouldn't that be no-one, with a hyphen?

Maybe, yes. I thought of something like that. It is a men magazine and they could mean somthing like connection between a man and a woman. For example "N(o)ne will stay calm". Just a thought.

'Nobody will stay calm' sounds a bit better, more natural than 'None will stay calm'.
None will stay calm is grammatically correct, but sounds rather "stilted" (i.e., artificial and ESL-ish)

Much more natural in this context would be:

Nobody'll be able to control themselves.* (Or, "Nobody's gonna be able...")

    Alternatively, you could say:

Verily, none shall successfully maintain composure and decorum!

(In other words, make the sentence SO artificial/bookish/theatrical/old-fashioned that it creates a humorous and "campy" effect. The trouble with None will stay calm is that it sounds a BIT artificial, but not so artificial that it becomes funny. It merely sounds -- well, non-native.

    * Note that "nobody" is singular and "themselves" is plural -- this is an example of how "they" (and other forms of the 3rd person plural) can be used colloquially as a quasi-singular pronoun meaning "he or she".

Of course, since Maxim is aimed at heterosexual men and they're talking about hot women here, there's actually not much justification for using a "unisex" pronoun, and it would be quite logical to say "Nobody's gonna be able to control himself."

But in English we've become so accustomed to this gender-inclusive "singular they" that people often use it out of pure habit, even when it's totally ridiculous to do so (e.g., "If someone tries to rape you, try kicking them in the testicles.")

Speaking of hot women and "campy" English, here's Miss Raquel Welch in the (very, VERY 1960s) comedy The Magic Christian, with Peter Sellers and Ringo Starr:

"During my reign as Priestess Of The Whip, I have never seen such unmitigated SLOTH! "

That doesn't sound right in English either. No one will stay calm? Under what circumstances? Maybe you mean 'no one can stay calm'.
