nominative case "is", will be, was, in description

I am having difficulty with describing things in the various tenses in the nominative case (the subject of the sentence), particularly with the verb "to be".

Я играю в теннис с молодым энергичным братом в мирном парке

but

How do you say -

"He thinks it is interesting"

"I think this russian book is interesting"?

Он дамает, что интересно?
Я дамаюб что яусская книга интересно?


If I am by coincidence right, then, how would I say "this book was interesting". "This book will be interesting"?

Am I missing something? There is no "is" in Russian in this instance. I'm surprised your textbook does not make this clear.

Yes, we don't speak "есть" in present tense. Theoretically it is there but just isn't pronounced.

Это книга. (Theoretically it should be: "Это есть книга") but the Russians are just too lazy to pronounce an extra word.

As you saw with your examples, the verb "to be" is at its place in past and future tenses:

Present: Эта книга -- интересная. (we use dash instead)
Past: Эта книга была интересной.
Future: Эта книга будет интересной.

Кстати о творительном падеже, можно включить еще одно предложение и глагол: Эта книга является учебником.

Actually, once upon a time, long time ago, the Russian verb быть used to be conjugated.

Аз (я) есьм
Ты еси
Он/она/оно есть
Мы есьмы
Вы есьте
Они суть

Nowadays, though, есть is the only surviving relic of the verb быть, and it is the universal conjugation for each person and number in the verb (exception: они суть, but that's somewhat rare, and есть can still be used in that regard).

For the most part nowadays есть (as the verb to be, not 'there is) it is avoided, however it may be used in strict circumstances:

Reinforcing that something is this and nothing else:
Закон есть закон!
The law is the law!

Using two interrogative pronouns:
Кто есть кто?
Who is who?

Reinforcing a notion, in contradiction to what another person said:
- Нужно справедливое решение.
- Нашe решение и есть спаведливое!

- We need a fair decision
- Our decision IS fair!

Strict definition:
Прямая линия есть кратчайшее расстояние между двумя точками.
A straight line is the shortest distance between two points.

Now, however, in many academic or upscale writing, or in official and formal discourse, являться + inst. is the equivalent of the verb to be. Either that or the extremely formal представлять собой + acc.

Of course, "является" has a different meaning here.
