I believe that's what imperfective verbs are for.

Я сделю еду - I make food (on a regular basis)
Я делаю еду - I make food (but only right now)

Someone correct me if i'm wrong. I'm still learning
    Я знаю
    Что делаю
    Вилкою
    Пирогу

    How to Post

It is not clear in English what you are referring to. Do you mean "to keep on" as in "He kept on running, even as the bullets pounded into the ground around him", or "He kept on smoking, even though he knew it wasn't good for him"? I think there might be a difference in how you translate it, but I'm not sure. You can use не перестать, though. Все еще also sounds like a reasonable translation, but for me it doesn't have the same feel as "kept on"; it's more like "still."

Maybe this is when the word "to continue" comes in?

    Продолжать

Он продолжает ругаться - He continues to curse

Maybe пока (still) can be used with a different shade of meaning

он пока ругается - He is still cursing

    ?

actually, i'd like to be able to translate both. bit i was originally referring to your first example, not a habit, but to "continue an action".

if a native could translate that (examples are always better than an abstruse definition):

    it keeps on raining.
    i keep thinking the same.
    the plant keeps getting bigger.

he carries on smoking (not one cigarette, but smoking on a daily basis).
i want to keep up my singing lessons.
    to keep going.
if you keep this up, you'll be sorry.

    nonnative speaking here.

Use всё as the intensifier, immediately before the verb.

Он всё кричал. He kept on shouting. He shouted and shouted.

Likewise он всё курил, он всё бежал.

Often they'll repeat the verb like we do - he smoked and smoked. Он всё курил, курил.

    it keeps on raining.
Дождь так и идёт... (Sounds kinda sad)
    Or: дождь идёт, и идёт.
    На улице по-прежнему (идёт) дождь.

    i keep thinking the same.
Я всё думаю о том же (так же)

    the plant keeps getting bigger.
    Растение так и растёт.
    Растение растёт, и растёт.
Растение продолжает расти -doesn't sound good at all. It would be correct / might be used if you would try to kill the plant but it would keep growing. Then:
Он не поливал растение, но оно продолжало расти. Он поставил его в тёмную комнату, но оно продолжало расти.

he carries on smoking (not one cigarette, but smoking on a daily basis).
Он продолжает курить. (It's like somebody forbids it, but he keeps smoking)
Он всё курит и курит... -the best translation, I would say.
Он курит. (In long term or right now, right here -"He smokes")

i want to keep up my singing lessons.
Я хочу продолжать брать уроки пения.

    to keep going.
    Продолжать (говорить, идти, делать что-либо, и т.д.)

if you keep this up, you'll be sorry.
Если будешь продолжать (в том же духе) , ты пожалеешь.

wouldn't it be possible to say:
    esli prodoljich...

i have absolutely no idea where and why people use simple or composed future

This reminds me of when I was at school, in Spanish class, a guy wanted to say "he kept on spending money", so he got his dictionary out, and looked up 'keep', then the word 'on'.....

Well продолжИть и продолжАть are two different words actually.
Let me just give you examples:

    продолжИть что-то (subject) ->
(продолжить линию, продолжить традицию, продолжить разговор)

    продолжАть делать что-то (verb) ->
    (продолжать писать, продолжать разговаривать)

Let me think more about it...
